What Is Colic? Causes, Symptoms & Remedies

Colic is a common condition among newborns and infants. It can be challenging to watch your child suffer, but there are many ways that you can try to help. Swaddling your Baby can help comfort them, as can gentle and rhythmic rocking. Massaging or applying a warm washcloth to the Baby’s abdomen may also help reduce symptoms.

It is important to remain calm and patient when dealing with Colic, as it can be a stressful experience for parents and caregivers. With patience and understanding, you can help your Baby get through this period of discomfort with minimal difficulty.

The truth about Colic: what it is and what it isn’t

Colic is a condition that affects some newborns and infants. It typically involves excessive crying, irritability, and fussiness for extended periods, up to several hours a day.

The cause of this disease is unknown, and there is no known cure, but there are things that can be done to try to ease the symptoms. Colic usually resolves itself after three months, but it can sometimes last up to nine months.

Crying is every Baby’s way of communication. Whether hungry, sleepy, sore, or just bored – they call. The biggest issue that every Baby goes through is Colic.

What is crying all about !!!

Colic is periods of intense and loud crying, for no apparent reason, for 3 hours or more a day. These crying durations start between the 2-4th week after birth and may occur anytime or night, mainly between 6 pm and midnight.

Surprisingly almost 1/5th of all babies experience this symptom. Baby boys and girls get this in equal numbers and breastfed and formula-fed babies. This excessive crying is habitually at its worst in a baby’s 2nd or 3rd months, but the length of this crying time usually varies from Baby to Baby. Colic usually goes away by the 6th month of Baby’s age.

What Causes Colic?

Experts still cannot pinpoint what exactly causes it – but here are some possible explanations:

  • The Baby’s digestive system takes about 6 months to develop, so the Baby communicates by crying when in discomfort.
  • Acid reflux is a common cause of digestive system development.
  • The Baby is gassy, which is also expected in newborn babies – when a baby passes gas – it is incredibly uncomfortable.
  • Young babies can get overstimulated / understimulated by their situations throughout the day.

Symptoms of your Baby’s distress

As a new parent/mother, it’s natural to be anxious about your Baby’s development. I am sure you are confused about the difference between Colic and normal crying. If you speculate you have a colicky baby, look out for the following possible signs of Colic:

  • Does your Baby extend his legs or pull them up to his tummy?
  • He arches his back while crying
  • Moves his arms and legs while calling / Gets a red or flushed face while crying
  • He clenches his fists while crying
  • Has a tight stomach to touch and passes lots of gas.

How to calm your crying Baby

I have seen parents who feel at their wit’s end once the crying does kick in. These tricks can sometimes help settle Colic in babies:

  • Give ample tummy time to your child. This is suggested to be given from the day you bring your baby from the hospital.
  • Give your Baby a pacifier — sucking on this may help calm them.
  • Babies like motion, so putting them in a swing or a baby rocker may help them calm down.
  • Try and walk with your Baby in a baby carrier or hold her against your body. When the Baby feels you against their body, it may help them relax.
  • Place your baby across your lap, tummy down, and rub her back.
  • Try Mother Sparsh Tummy roll on
  • Could you give her a warm bath?
  • Please give her a little space, as she may feel overwhelmed or overstimulated by lights or noises.
