What Is Colic? Causes, Symptoms & Remedies

Crying is every baby’s way of communication. Whether they are hungry, sleepy, irate, or just bored – they cry. The biggest issue that every baby goes through is Colic.

What Is Colic? Causes, Symptoms & Remedies

What is the crying all about !!!

Colic is defined as periods of intense and loud crying, for no clear reason, for 3 hours or more a day. These crying durations start between the 2-4th week after birth and may occur at any time of day or night, mostly between 6 pm and midnight.

Surprisingly almost 1/5th of all babies experience this symptom. Baby boys and girls get this in equal numbers and breastfed and formula-fed babies. This excessive crying is habitually at its worst in a baby’s 2nd or 3rd months, but the length of this crying time usually varies from baby to baby. Colic usually goes away by 6th months of age of the baby.

What Causes Colic?

Experts still cannot pinpoint what exactly causes it – but here are some possible explanations:

  • The baby’s digestive system takes about 6 months to develop and hence the baby when in discomfort communicates by crying.
  • Acid reflux is a common cause of digestive system developments
  • The baby is gassy, which is also normal in new-born babies – when a baby passes gas – it is extremely uncomfortable.
  • Young babies can get overstimulated / under stimulated by their situations throughout the day.

Symptoms of your baby’s distress

As a new parent/mother it’s quite natural to be anxious about your baby’s development. I am sure you do wonder about the difference between colic and normal crying. If you speculate you have a colicky baby, look out for the following possible signs of colic:

  • Does your baby extends his legs or pulls them up to his tummy?
  • Arches his back while crying
  • Moves his arms and legs while crying / Gets a red or flushed face while crying
  • Clenches his fists while crying
  • Has a tight stomach to touch and passes lots of gas.

How to calm your crying Baby

I have seen parents, who feel at the wit’s end once the crying does kick in. These tricks can sometimes help settle colic in babies:

  • Give ample tummy time to your child. This is suggested to be given from the day; you bring your baby home from the hospital.
  • Give your baby a pacifier — sucking on this may help calm her / him
  • Babies like motion and so putting them in a swing or a baby rocker may help them calm down
  • Try and walk with your baby in a baby carrier, or hold her against your body. When the baby feels you against their body, it may help them relax
  • Place your baby across your lap, tummy down, and rub her back.
  • Try Mother sparsh Tummy roll on
  • Give her a warm bath.
  • Give her a little space, as she may be feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated by lights or noises.
